I won't re-hash the entire video, but here are the key points:

Any human enterprise operates at several domains of activity. I've boiled it down to four, and I don't draw them in a pyramid or inverted pyramid like a lot of other folks do because I think they are each of equal importance in their way. They are:

Mission
Goals
Strategies
Tactics

There are different ways to express each layer: Mission Vision Values for the top, SMART goals or OKRs for the goals, and so on. For this course I'm not going into the weeds for anything other than mission.

What's essential is that you be able to articulate your concept of how they all link together. Your goals need to hang from your mission, your strategies should hang off of your goals, and your tactics should hang from your strategies. That's why I've drawn the diagram below with chains on the left.

Looking from the bottom up, your tactics should support your strategies, which support your goals, which support your mission. Thus the pillars on the right.

Note that there are only two endpoints: your mission and your tactics. You spend WAY more time on one than on the other. But it is easy for those tactics to serve a strange master: maybe that Facebook group you're a part of tells you that you really need to do content marketing in a certain way. Or a software company tries to convince you that you really need to streamline your intake. Let's face it, there are thousands of possible ways that you could improve your practice in the abstract.

But only one or two of those things are going to support your particular needs at this particular moment. And you should define those needs within the context of your mission: What am I trying to accomplish in the world? Then through goals: What can I measure to know that I'm making progress? Then strategies: What set of things should I try to move the needle on my goals?

Having clarity at each level will help you with one of the most important things you can possibly do to improve your practice: Decide what not to do.

There is an Agile aphorism that I'm particularly fond of:

Simplicity is the art of maximizing the work not done.

When you've defined your mission, you not only lay the foundation for the things you are trying to accomplish, you also, by extension, define the things you aren't trying to do. That's a powerful way to help make sure that your and your teams' finite capacity gets used to work towards the right sorts of things.
